Backyard Ultra events use a loop-based format where athletes start a 4.167–4.19 mile lap every hour until only one runner remains. Traditional race result fields (place, finish time, etc.) do not represent performance well for this format.
Currently on UltraSignup:
Results display a single “Time” field, which represents elapsed race time, not lap time.
This creates confusion because race directors and participants expect to see lap-based statistics instead.
The results page does not support common Backyard Ultra metrics such as total laps or lap statistics.
Race directors would like the ability to display results more closely aligned with the Backyard Ultra reporting standard used by Big’s Backyard Ultra.
Requesting:
Allow Backyard Ultra events to present results in a format that reflects the way these races are evaluated.
Specifically:
Clearly represent laps completed as the primary performance metric.
Avoid confusion between elapsed race time and lap time.
Support additional statistics derived from lap split data.
Optional Backyard Ultra results mode for events using this format.
Additional derived statistics from lap splits.
Clear labeling of time fields to distinguish:
elapsed race time
lap duration
It would also be helpful to sort DNFs sequentially (by yards completed)
This is a great one.
In addition, a way to designate a DNF differently than other “standard” races. I have encountered hesitation to register because a DNF if you don’t win will tank your ultrasignup score/looks bad on your profile. Though the profile shouldn’t be a big deal it is in some peoples eyes.
DNF / DNS does not affect your UltraSignup ranking.
Also, according to the official Backyard Ultra Association guidelines, there’s only one official finisher, and All others are technically DNF. A race director can choose to clasify everyone else with the status “unofficial finish”
